Major Consultation Event Announced for Shrewsbury South SUE

First City have been actively promoting a significant mixed use urban extension to the South of Shrewsbury Town Centre. The site was allocated as Shrewsbury South Sustainable Urban Extensions (SUE), one of the two areas of the town identified to meet the town’s future housing and employment needs within the Shropshire Core Strategy that was adopted in February 2011 and maps the development strategy for Shropshire including Shrewsbury up to 2026. The site has been selected because it provides the best opportunities for sustainable and balanced development relatively close to the town centre.

As a result of the adoption of the Core Strategy First City in conjunction with Shropshire Council are preparing a development Masterplan for the Shrewsbury South Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE).

The site is located on the south-eastern edge of the town, principally to the north and south of Oteley Road (B4380) between the Welsh Marches Rail line in the west and Wenlock Road to the east. It also includes land for the extension of Shrewsbury Business Park south of Thieves Lane, and the A5 Shrewsbury Bypass forms the southern boundary of the development area. The site is approximately 82 hectares.

The intention of the Shrewsbury South Sustainable Urban Extension (SUE) Masterplan is to create a high-quality place which maintains and enhances the qualities and character of the town. It will promote the use of sustainable transport and will enhance the area’s existing landscape features.

The Masterplan has been developed to include provision for approximately 900 homes to the north and south of Oteley Road; employment land to the south of Shrewsbury Business Park and adjacent to Shrewsbury Town FC (approximately 26 hectares); a neighbourhood centre including community, retail and other uses; sustainable transport measures and scope for improvements to the existing A5 junction (if required) plus green infrastructure and public open space.

Before this Masterplan is ready for formal adoption by Shropshire Council later this year, First City are seeking the views of the local community to help us fine-tune our proposals. Once adopted, the Masterplan will be used to inform subsequent planning applications for this 82-hectare site, ensuring a consistency of approach as this important site is developed in future years.

A public consultation event will take place between 2pm and 7.45pm on Friday 20th July, and 2pm and 7.45pm on Saturday 21st July, at the Arthur Rowley Lounge, Shrewsbury Town FC, Oteley Road, Shrewsbury, SY2 6ST to give residents and other interested parties the the opportunity to view the Masterplan and to have their say.
